"AMERICAN INDIAN CULTURE AND EDUCATION IN MINNESOTA TODAY"
by Ramona Kitto Stately

For the First People of Minnesota (mnisota, water that reflects the sky), the stories and the land are inseparable. To dwell in this land is to be surrounded by a sacred story-scape that is little known or understood by most present-day Minnesotans. The land presents a silent testimony to the wisdom and spirituality of its once-vibrant people.  We will discuss/review National data about the invisibility of indigenous peoples across the country. Ramona Kitto Stately will discuss how our Education systems can help shift the narrative and increase the understanding of Minnesota history and why it is important.

RAMONA KITTO STATELY is an enrolled member of the Santee Sioux Dakota Nation. She has a BA  in Dakota Art and Culture, and a MaEd with an emphasis on Teacher leadership from Augsburg University. She has coordinated and directed Indian Education for ISD279 Osseo Area School District since 2005 and in June 2020 has taken the role of Project Director for theWe Are Still Here Minnesota project, creating action for narrative change. Ramona is the mother of two children, an accomplished beadwork artist and a part of the scholars team with of the Minnesota Humanities Center’s for Learning from Place: Bdote.
