SWMetro Students pose with their awards following the MN HOSA Competition

Eleven SouthWest Metro Medical Careers students travelled to Saint Cloud on March 20th for the two day Minnesota State Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) conference and competition. Students from Chanhassen High, Chaska High, and the Integrated Arts Academy participated in the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), First Aid/CPR, Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), and Nursing Assistant competitions. The competitions each require students to participate in a written examination and a timed scenario, where students must use their knowledge of various healthcare skills and apply their abilities to a specific set of injuries and conditions presented to them with one or more simulated patients.

Those who place in the top five of the state competition are formally recognized and receive awards for their accomplishments. First through third place winners qualify for the 2018 International Leadership Conference (ILC) in Dallas, Texas in June. Those in fourth and fifth place provisionally qualify.

CERT – Danielle Pothier (Chanhassen), First Place; Jacob Donacik (Chaska), First Place; Hayley Haas (Chaska), Second Place; Kylie Harrison (Chaska), Second Place; Kaitlyn Oberg (Chanhassen), Fifth Place; Marie Schultz (Chanhassen), Fifth Place
