Art Teacher, SWMHS

Hello, All! My name is Danica Winter and I am the new art instructor at SWMHS. I am originally from Willmar, MN and moved to the Twin Cities to pursue my education.

I attended the University of Minnesota, receiving my undergraduate in Psychology and Studio art. After spending some time working in the social work fields and focusing on my own art practice (mixed media), I went back to the U of M and received my Masters in Art Education.

Before starting at SWMHS this semester, I had spent some time working in long call art positions and running an Art Therapy based program at the Ebenezer Care Centers.

My husband Ben and I live in Northeast Minneapolis in a live/work artist studio, Artspace Jackson Flats. I am an active member of the North East Minneapolis Art Association (NEMAA), participating and curating a variety of art shows each year.

It is my belief that one cannot have art without culture and the best way to experience culture is first hand. I love to travel, observe, and collect art from far away lands, as well as share these experiences with students. I also love to scuba dive, read, hike, and anything outdoors.

I am looking forward to working with students in a collaborative manner at SWMHS, exposing students to a variety of local artists, and continuing to build a choice-based classroom around the Studio Habits of Mind.
